Check Out My Monument

So we get this beautiful new addition to our football stadium, due in part to the generosity of C. Richard Vaughn. The new addition is named Vaughn Towers. It has just been completed in time for football season, and they have placed a plaque honoring Mr. Vaughn at the base.

So here’s the shiny new building, and everyone’s gonna gather round and marvel, and they are gonna see the plaque and go

“Hey, why is Mr. Vaughn holding a bananOH SWEET JESUS WHAT IS GOING ON oh wait no, . . . what the hell is that anyway? (sigh) Well this is embarassing.”

This Man is Excited About Football

hi justin

Yeah so we’re enjoying watermelon at work. You know how we do in NC.

Nothing to See Here

The cheesecake was good. I liked it. Billy and Chris liked it. Dayo liked it, and that guy can bake a mean cake. Mandy liked it, which is important because if anyone knows a cheesecake, it is her. My first cheesecake and it went well. The crust was a little thick — I noticed that while i was making it. The consensus seems to be that it was ok but disproportionately thick. It would have been at home at the Cheesecake Factory, where the cakes are about 16″ deep. Oh well, the crust can be improved without too much effort I think. The filling is much harder to get right and I seemed to do that well.

The apple Bundt cake didn’t go as well. It tasted fine but halfway disintegrated on the way out of the pan. Note to self: grease the pan better. I have made this before and never had that problem. Anyway, I ended up only bringing about 1/3 of it to work, and it was pretty, but it looked like I was bringing leftovers.

So yeah, been doing a lot of baking.

This weekend has involved a lot of sleeping. Two months ago, I’d had such trouble sleeping that I bought some OTC sleeping pills. Now, it has flipped round. I think I have gotten 10 hours of sleep during 3 out of the past 4 nights. Normally I wouldn’t want to sleep that much, but this week is gonna suck, constant running from class to class to help freshmen in distress, so I figure I may as well get sleep when I can. I don’t believe I will be in my office for longer than a few minutes at a time. I hope nothing goes wrong that derails my schedule.

Hey look! Bridget was quoted in the Post!

A team inaction packed

Went to the Skins-Panthers game this weekend. The Panthers are good; the Skins are not. I am not surprised by either. This article is, unfortunately, correct.

Clinton Portis had a long touchdown run against the Buccaneers in the opening game last season, and that was pretty much it for the team’s big plays.
So much of the season was viewed in eyes-glazed-over mode.
You would sit down to watch a football game, and inevitably, a soccer match would break out.
There was that sinking feeling anew in this initial inspection of the Redskins.

An Epiphany in the Kitchen

I got a KitchenAid Stand Mixer.

Oh my God. I mix things just to watch them mix.
It’s like a Spirograph that makes food.

Last week I made brownies — you know, the cheating kind from a box. I’d had that box on the shelf for months, thinking man, I should make those brownies sometime. And so last week, I took the box, read the back, and fixed them up. The brownies began to rise in the oven. What? Better actually read the box. Oh, it was Devil’s Food Cake mix. I didn’t even care, man, because I got to mix it. I ended up eating about 1/10th of that cake before it went bad, but for me, the fun was in the journey, not the product.

Tonight I made brownies again, reading the box carefully this time, and damn, they turned out like Devil’s Food Cake anyway.

Because I overmixed them.

Again, I didn’t even care, because I got to mix it, and I knew it was gonna happen. I was sitting there staring at the orbital motion of the mixer thinking: man, I know this is gonna ruin the mix, but look at that beautiful son of a bitch move. I’ll probably take them to work and make Michael eat them, cause even though it tastes good, I’m not eating a 12×9 sheet of cakebrownie hybrid myself.

Gonna make a cheesecake this week. I don’t know how I’m going to turn that one into Devil’s Food Cake, but I am sure as hell not gonna hold back on the mixing.

A Roadblock for Reagan

Well, if this doesn’t go through, we’ll probably see a bill recommending DC be renamed to Reaganopolis. Actually, we’ll probably see that bill no matter what. By the way, thumbs up to Rep. Thomas M. Davis III (R-Va.) for saying that he’d put the bill in the “appropriate file.” I assume that means he will let Oscar the Grouch take it home.

Quote of the Day: RB #26

Quote of the day goes to Clinton Portis. . .

[Sean] Taylor’s friend, running back Clinton Portis, said he didn’t think Taylor will be distracted by the upcoming trial, in part because lawyers probably will ask to postpone it until the end of the season.

“He shouldn’t be worried. They knocked everybody else’s trial back, so why would they make him come in September?” Portis said. “They put Michael Jackson’s trial back, and he ain’t got a concert anytime soon.”
