Ohio was infinitely excellent. Flew up, the ride was bumpy. Waited in the labyrinthine Columbus airport for a long while as Cynthia drove from Athens to pick me up. Found her, and then we went to a very yuppie mall that was a lot like Southpoint. Went to a bunch of yuppie stores; met a gentleman at Express who could not have been fruitier if he was dressed as a pineapple; bought chocolate.
Headed southeast, and stopped in Lancaster to go to Target. This made Cynthia very happy, as El Wal*Mart Gigante in Athens just ain’t a Target. We then went to Red Lobster, ate lots of sea-food, and now I have had an actual lobster tail. I elected to eat only the meat and sent the exoskeleton back, as I don’t need that much harsh roughage. I think it was overcooked, but still delicious. And the lady paid! I fell asleep on the way home and was dead to the world, even slept through Nelsonville, the town that is famous for being entirely made out of potholes.
Friday: Cynthia had to leave earlyish, as she had some classes and a math test. I stayed home, watched VH1, fixed up the lady’s computer, watched Andy Griffith, talked on IM, did some dishes. In the afternoon, once Cynthia got back, we went over to campus and to downtown Athens, where there were tons and tons of people. There was a hockey tournament there, and it was “Sibs Weekend,” where apparently OU students bring their little siblings to school and give them beer. I went to a record store, curiously named Schoolkids but unaffiliated with the Schoolkids around here. We then met Cynthia’s friends Brittany and Sandy for dinner at Tomatillos, which is their El Rodeo but maybe a little more gourmet. A fine meal. The ladies all had frozen strawberry margaritas; I had a lime one on the rocks. They are generous with the alcohol there. After about 3 sips I became a lot more talkative.
Saturday: went to the bulk food store. It was nice that there were probably 4 other customers that were there while we were. Nice to see the little guy getting some business. When you go to stores like that, it becomes clear why people dislike Wal*Mart – they put so many independent stores out of business. However, Wal*Mercado has convenience, which is something very important to us lazy Americans. And we went to the Emporio de Walton Super Gigante in Athens that afternoon. Didn’t buy all that much, but I did get a DVD of The Poseidon Adventure for $5. Got some records from Schoolkids. We dined upon meatball sammiches while watching Ocean’s Eleven.
Sunday: I had to go home. Sad. But neither of us were all sad about it really; it is a good feeling to know that you had a good time without sinking into post-visit depression. The flights home were okay. Nice and sunny until RDU.
This work week has held little of import. I am working on the web site and learning new technology. Also switched offices with Aaron. Back to the grind. . .
